Air Brussels: The legacy of Sabena Airlines Still Lives on in Rwanda

Air Brussels, formerly Sabena started to fly to Rwanda from Brussels and Usumbura, in 1950s, by serving Kamembe (Rwanda – Urundi). In 1960s, the airline moves to Kigali. In 2001, Sabena collapsed; it was replaced in 2002 by SN Brussels Airlines which became in 2007 Brussels Airlines.

After the 1994 genocide against Tutsi, Brussels Airlines has benefited for many years a monopoly on connections Europe, Rwanda, with prices cheerfully exceeding 1,000 euros round trip from Brussels.

In recent years, the airline has learnt to deal with fierce competitors, including KLM (via Amsterdam) and Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul), who perform much more attractive rates it difficult to follow.

Brussels Airlines has continued to make its print in Rwanda’s aviation industry and has unveiled its new long haul experience- A new experience onboard intercontinental flights since 2012.

The entire long haul fleets were refurbished providing passenger with superior comfort to make sure you arrive relaxed and fit at your destination.

In 2013 at Hotel des mille collines, Brussels Airlines launched and presented its new cabin. Business men, heads of Institutions both Public and Private, Ambassadors, Chief Executive Officers from different Corporate Companies attended the event.

The new Cabin had Economy class and Business class respectively; 30 seats in business class with new levels of superior quality and design, the Cabin configuration will offer 24 seats with direct aisle access and 10 single seats. It has a king seat in Economy class and a double seat for couples.

The unique Cabin contains gourmet cuisine with a selection of delicious food, 4-course menu with selection of starters and highlights from Belgian cuisine.

The customers enjoy fine wines and spirits from prestigious cellars accompanied with famous Belgian chocolates, desserts, ice cream, and fresh fruit available throughout the flight.

Inside the Cabin a customer gets a rejuvenating sleep on a superior flat bed of 2m with a large pillow and new bedding amenities.

Customers also get Luxurious comfort where seats are equipped with a pneumatic cushion allowing passengers to choose the precise seat softness, relaxing massage and lumbar adjustment options, Leading technology inside with innovative touch screen-controlled seat, adjustable blue mood lighting to create personal lounge atmosphere.

Brussels Airlines new Cabin has a revolutionary entertainment with content available in six languages, where a passenger can connect or recharge personal device and remote control is provided for convenience.
